Netflix has released the first trailer for Ryan Murphy’s big film adaptation of the Broadway musical The Prom. Like all of Murphy’s productions, this project is filled with a lot of vibrant energy. It explodes with music and dancing, and anyone familiar with the musical is sure to like what this trailer shows off. This is sure to be a glitzy musical extravaganza.
The film also comes with an impressive all-star cast that includes Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, and newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman. Here’s the synopsis:
Dee Dee Allen (Streep) and Barry Glickman (Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
The Prom was directed by Ryan Murphy, and it’s described as a “spectacular, big-hearted film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical.” The screenplay was written by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin.
The Prom arrives in limited theaters and on Netflix on December 11, 2020. If you enjoy musicals, then you’ll probably enjoy this.
